YIVO Jewish Culture Series



The YIVO Jewish Culture Series was developed in partnership with the YIVO Institute for Educational Research. (YIVO.org)  The YIVO is a Jewish cultural institution known for its world renowned library and archive of Jewish history and culture.  The lecture series presenters are drawn from the extensive network of scholars affiliated with the YIVO. The events are open to the broader community.

Sunday, October 27 · 2:00 pm   Nationalism, Religion, Antisemitism: The Nexus of Hate in Eastern Europe Today     Dr. Jonathan Brent, CEO of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, discusses the disturbing recent events in Poland (and America), and the fundamental problems of Jewish-Polish dialogue.

Sunday, April 19 – 2:00 pm     What’s Jewish About Jewish Folklore  Folklorist and author Itzik Gottesman looks at how Jewish folklore is different from other folklores around the world, while, at the same time, discussing how it shares many of the same characteristics.

Sunday, May 24 · 2:00 pm   A Jewish Refugee Woman in New York in the 1920s through the Lens of a Yiddish Novel   Professor and author Dr. Anita Norich examines acculturation and the challenges and fears faced by Jewish refugees who were able to escape to the United States as war broke out in Poland.
